When the idea of setting up The Canvas Hotel was conceived, the aspiration was to create not just a cosy place to stay while away from home but a memorable experience that makes the traveller want to come back for more.

On top of the overarching goal of providing an exceptional abode for vacationers and business travellers, the experiential differentiation is in the symbiotic interaction of interior design, service and the surrounds.

To help bring this goal to fruition, The Canvas Hotel has engaged some of the top and upcoming talents in creativity. Veteran and award winning artist Wong Chee Meng created a series of 20 beautiful paintings while coffee tables and chairs are from Nokta, a young local furniture maker that has won numerous awards. To provide the glow and warmth, Stephanie Ng from Stephanie Ng Designs has come up with table and stand lamps specially for Canvas Hotel. Throw cushions created by Nala Designs add colour to the rooms and public areas of the hotel.

The Art of Wong Chee Meng

At The Canvas Hotel, we believe that no visit to a place is complete without immersing oneself in its culture and central to any culture is its art. 

The Canvas Hotel commissioned veteran artist Wong Chee Meng to come up with “In Love with Illumination”, a series of 20 paintings that help define the individuality of the hotel.

Inspired by Malaysian flora and fauna, our guests will find Wong Chee Meng's artworks adorn the walls of every room and public areas of the hotel, creating a gallery of sorts which our guests may enjoy during their stay with us.

Lighting by Stephanie Ng Design

Stephanie Ng is a multi-award winning lighting designer based in Malaysia. She loves working with colour, form, texture and unique tactile materials with a focus on versatility to create innovative, hand-crafted quality lighting products. Put simply, Stephanie’s work is more art than science.

As a result of our collaboration with Stephanie, she has designed a bespoke table lamp that is proudly illuminating the desks within each of our studios and suites. Another of her creation, the three-legged fabric floor lamp, may also be found at the concierge and reception lobbies and our suites.

Furniture Designers and Craftsmen from Nokta

In our search for well-designed furniture for The Canvas Hotel, we have by chance stumbled upon local creative and craft oriented furniture company - Nokta. A partnership between master craftsmen Suradi, Harith, Nik and multi-award winning furniture design talent Shahril Faisal, Nokta is a design focused organisation born and bred in Malaysia. 

SATAH sofas and armchairs and TERES coffee tables by Nokta are proudly displayed at our concierge and reception lobbies as well as our suites. Through our collaboration with Nokta, we are able to support local Malaysian talents while providing our guests with the enjoyment of using well-designed and well-made furniture.

Queen of Patterns: Nala Designs

Nala, the brainchild of its founder Lisette Aline Scheers, prides itself on the fact that its range of products are artisanal and the designs are inspired by the country’s melting pot of Malays, Chinese and Indian cultures. From designing and making stationery in an attempt to revive the forgotten art of letter writing, Nala is today a brand that is synonamous with creativity and elegance.

In The Canvas Hotel, Nala cushions in various hand drawn patterns are placed tastefully in every room and also at reception lobbies, providing a contrasting burst of colour and evoking a feeling of fun and joy.
